When at last the beginning of the endcame, in the evacuation of Richmond andthe effort to retreat, everything seemed to goto pieces at once. The best disciplinariansin the army relaxed their reins. The besttroops became disorganized, and hardly anycommand marched in a body. Companieswere mixed together, parts of each beingseparated by detachments of others. Flyingcitizens in vehicles of every conceivablesort accompanied and embarrassed the columns.Many commands marched heedlesslyon without orders, and seeminglywithout a thought of whither they were going.Others mistook the meaning of theirorders, and still others had instructionswhich it was impossible to obey in anycase. At Amelia Court House we shouldhave found a supply of provisions. Gen[244]eralLee had ordered a train load to meethim there, but, as I have stated in a previouschapter, the interests of the starvingarmy had been sacrificed to the convenienceor the cowardice of the president and hispersonal following. The train had been hurriedon to Richmond and its precious cargoof food thrown out there, in order that Mr.Davis and his people might retreat rapidlyand comfortably from the abandoned capital.Then began the desertion of which wehave heard so much. Up to that time, asfar as I can learn, if desertions had occurredat all they had not become general; butnow that the government, in flying fromthe foe, had cut off our only supply of provisions,what were the men to do? Manyof them wandered off in search of food,with no thought of deserting at all. Manyothers followed the example of the government,and fled; but a singularly large proportionof the little whole stayed andstarved to the last. And it was no tech[245]nicalor metaphorical starvation which wehad to endure, either, as a brief statementof my own experience will show. The batteryto which I was attached was capturednear Amelia Court House, and within amile or two of my home. Seven men onlyescaped, and as I knew intimately everybodyin the neighborhood, I had no troublein getting horses for these to ride. Applyingto General Lee in person for instructions,I was ordered to march on, using myown judgment, and rendering what serviceI could in the event of a battle. In this independentfashion I marched with muchbetter chances than most of the men had,to get food, and yet during three days andnights our total supply consisted of one earof corn to the man, and we divided thatwith our horses.
