For the last few years, Chromebooks running Google Chrome OS have been providing an alternative to "traditional" laptops. Thanks to lots of choices, from very affordable models to high-end ones, Chromebooks are especially popular among students, who can use them for learning, completing assignments, and attending classes virtually.


While Chromebooks and Chrome OS are typically centered around the web browser, you can also enable a Linux environment that allows installing native desktop applications, including Visual Studio Code!


With VS Code running on your Chromebook, you can start coding easily and quickly in a variety of languages and frameworks. This includes languages such as Python, JavaScript and Node.js, Java, and C#, among many more!


In this article, the first of two, we'll look at how to install Visual Studio Code on a Chromebook and how to set up an environment to start coding in Python or JavaScript/Node.js. In a later post, we'll also look at how to leverage the Remote Development extensions for VS Code to connect to more powerful development environments.


Visual Studio Code is a lightweight editor, so you will be able to run it on low-powered Chromebooks, with a minimum of 1 GB of RAM. In addition, VS Code is now available for Linux on ARMv7 and ARM64, which means that you can run it on Chromebooks powered by an ARM chip as well!


Follow the instructions on screen to configure the Linux environment (for most people, accepting the default values should be enough). Your Chromebook will then download the tools to create the Linux environment and configure it for you. Behind the scenes, this is actually creating a container running Debian 10, so you get a full Linux distribution to play with!


Before we can install VS Code, we need to run a couple of commands in the Linux terminal. We need to update the list of Linux packages and to install the optional (but strongly recommended) dependency gnome-keyring. In the terminal, type the following two commands (press the Enter key at the end of each command to execute them):


If you're unsure what kind of CPU your Chromebook is using, run the command dpkg --print-architecture in the Linux terminal to find out. You'll see either amd64 (for both Intel and AMD chips: pick the 64 bit variant for VS Code) or arm64 (pick ARM64).


After the installation is complete, in your list of apps, you'll find Visual Studio Code inside a folder called Linux apps (along with the Linux terminal). You can now launch VS Code.


However, in order to use Node.js (and JavaScript in general) on your Chromebook, you'll have to install the Node.js runtime. To do that, we're going to use nvm, a small open-source utility that makes it easier to install Node.js and update it.


Tip: Did you know that VS Code contains an integrated terminal? You can launch it from the Terminal menu and then New Terminal. VS Code is running in the context of the Linux environment, so the integrated terminal is also running in Linux.


After Node.js is installed, you can use the node command in the terminal (running node --version is a good way to check your Node.js installation), as well as all the built-in features of VS Code, such as the integrated task runner and debugger for Node.js and JavaScript. VS Code is an excellent editor for coding Python and learning the language. You can use Python in VS Code both for building apps of every kind and for working with notebooks, such as those used by data scientists.


Chrome OS already comes with the Python 3 interpreter pre-installed, but we need to install a few more packages to get the best Python coding experience. This includes pip (a dependency manager for Python), venv (for managing Python virtual environments), and some build tools for working with native packages. In the terminal, run:


But wait, there's more. While Chromebooks can run VS Code just fine, even on lower-powered versions like the one I'm testing with, sometimes you need to use faster machines for your development, with more memory and/or a faster CPU. For example, maybe you're using an ARM-powered Chromebook but you need to run your code on a Intel/AMD chip. Or maybe you want to work with Artificial Intelligence and need access to machines with powerful GPUs.


Entrez Direct (EDirect) provides access to the NCBI's suite of interconnected databases (publication, sequence, structure, gene, variation, expression, etc.) from a Unix terminal window. Search terms are entered as command-line arguments. Individual operations are connected with Unix pipes to construct multi-step queries. Selected records can then be retrieved in a variety of formats.


EDirect will run on Unix and Macintosh computers, and under the Cygwin Unix-emulation environment on Windows PCs. To install the EDirect software, open a terminal window and execute one of the following two commands:


This will download a number of scripts and several precompiled programs into an "edirect" folder in the user's home directory. It may then print an additional command for updating the PATH environment variable in the user's configuration file. The editing instructions will look something like:


EDirect connects to Entrez through the Entrez Programming Utilities interface. It supports searching by indexed terms, looking up precomputed neighbors or links, filtering results by date or category, and downloading record summaries or reports.


Recent advances in technology provide an affordable and practical alternative. High-performance NVMe solid-state drives (which eliminate rotational delays for file access and bookkeeping operations) are readily available for purchase. Modern high-capacity file systems, such as APFS (which uses 64-bit inodes) or Ext4 (which can be configured for 100 million inodes), are now ubiquitous on contemporary computers. A judicious arrangement of multi-level nested directories (each containing no more than 100 subfolders or record files) ensures maximally-efficient use of these enhanced capabilities.


Then run archive-pubmed to download the PubMed release files and distribute each record on the drive. This process will take several hours to complete, but subsequent updates are incremental, and should finish in minutes.


Google's Go language (also known as "golang") is "an open source programming language that makes it easy to build simple, reliable, and efficient software". Go eliminates the need for maintaining complicated "make" files. The build system assumes full responsibility for downloading external library packages. Automated dependency management tracks module release numbers to prevent version skew.


Download the Braille Terminal Tools application below to install the Mantis driver on versions of JAWS earlier than 2020. If you are running JAWS 2020, ensure it is running the latest update, as the Mantis driver is included in JAWS 2020. For versions earlier than 2020, simply download and run the Braille Terminal Tools.exe file, and follow the prompts, ensuring that Mantis Q40 is the selected braille display when asked. After installing the driver, you will need to restart JAWS.


Books can either be read from one of the available storage media, (USB thumb drive, SD card, or internal storage), or by connecting your Mantis Q40 to an available wireless network. Once connected to Wi-Fi, you can download books from Bookshare or NFB Newsline.


You can update the Mantis in two ways. The simplest is by connecting it to WI-FI. When connected, the Mantis Q40 will automatically recognize there is a new firmware available, and prompt you to download and install it. Alternatively you can put the .SWU file you download from the APH web site to a thumb drive or SD card, insert them into the Mantis, and within around 30 seconds the device will restart and you will see a progress indicator. Do not remove the storage media or power off the Mantis Q40 during the update process.


To get more comfortable using the command line, take a look at [An Introduction to the Linux Terminal] ( -introduction-to-the-linux-terminal). The command line interface on macOS is very similar, and the concepts in that tutorial are directly applicable.


There are a few reasons for failure, and no easy way to know which is the underlying cause. If you do encounter a failure, you will need to re-download the entire file again each time you try to fix the failure. As the latest version is 8 gigabytes, I didn't much enjoy this approach.

The easiest way to install MacPorts on a Mac is by downloading the pkg or dmg for Ventura, Monterey, Big Sur, Catalina, Mojave, High Sierra, Sierra, El Capitan, Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion, Lion, Snow Leopard, Leopard or Tiger and running the system's Installer by double-clicking on the pkg contained therein, following the on-screen instructions until completion.
